5 ADHD/AuDHD TikToks That Made Me Go: “Wait, Is That Me?”
In recent years, social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts have played an unexpected but transformative role in how neurodivergent adults, especially women and AFAB individuals, come to understand themselves. For many late-diagnosed people living with ADHD, autism, or both (referred to as AuDHD), viral content has provided more than entertainment — it has delivered reflection, recognition, and relief.
This report explores five viral TikToks and Reels that prompted a moment of intense self-awareness and led many individuals to investigate their neurotype further. Each section is grounded in emerging research and diagnostic trends, illustrating how lived experience, digital storytelling, and peer resonance are reshaping diagnostic journeys.
1. Emotional Dysregulation: “Why am I crying over a spilled coffee lid?”
One of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of ADHD is emotional dysregulation — a phenomenon where individuals experience emotions more rapidly, more intensely, and with less ability to self-soothe. A viral video showing someone sobbing over a spilled coffee lid encapsulated this for many viewers, who saw their own lived experience reflected in that seemingly exaggerated moment.
According to Barkley et al. (2010), emotional dysregulation is not a side effect but a core element of ADHD, often existing alongside executive dysfunction. This means individuals may find themselves overwhelmed by frustration, disappointment, or shame — not because they lack resilience, but because their nervous systems are wired for emotional amplification.
Neuroscientific studies have shown that people with ADHD often have heightened activity in the amygdala (the brain’s emotion centre) and reduced connectivity with areas responsible for regulation, like the prefrontal cortex (Shaw et al., 2014). When combined with stress, sensory input, or social rejection, these neurological differences can make a minor moment — like spilling coffee — feel catastrophically heavy.
Importantly, many adults, particularly women and those socialised to suppress strong emotions, may not associate their struggles with emotion regulation with ADHD. Instead, they may internalise labels like “too emotional” or “irrational,” leading to cycles of shame and misunderstanding that delay diagnosis and self-compassion.
2. Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD): “I thought we were friends — why didn’t they reply?”
A painfully relatable TikTok described the spiral of overthinking that follows being left on “read” or receiving a blunt message. For those with ADHD, this experience may be far more than typical insecurity — it could be a sign of Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD), a condition increasingly acknowledged as part of the ADHD experience.
RSD is marked by intense emotional suffering following perceived or actual rejection, criticism, or failure. Individuals often experience an immediate physical reaction — a drop in the stomach, a racing heart, and an overwhelming sense of shame or panic. Dodson (2016) describes RSD as one of the most impairing features of ADHD, yet one of the least understood.
Gupta and Wymbs (2021) found that adults with ADHD who scored high on rejection sensitivity also reported increased emotional dysregulation and interpersonal difficulties. Many participants described isolating themselves preemptively to avoid perceived rejection, or catastrophising small misunderstandings.
For late-diagnosed individuals, RSD may have been misinterpreted for years as social anxiety, emotional immaturity, or trauma. Another viral TikTok shows someone entering a noisy, brightly lit store and becoming visibly agitated and disoriented — a moment that many viewers with ADHD or autism recognised instantly. For neurotypical people, a trip to the supermarket might be mundane. For neurodivergent individuals, it can be an overwhelming flood of stimuli.
Sensory overload occurs when the brain receives more input than it can effectively process. Common triggers include bright lights, loud noises, strong smells, crowded spaces, or multitasking environments. While sensory processing disorder is widely linked with autism, a growing body of research confirms that people with ADHD are also prone to sensory hypersensitivities (Bijlenga et al., 2017).
Panagiotidi et al. (2019) report that up to 50% of adults with ADHD experience heightened sensory sensitivity, particularly to noise and touch. These sensory issues often go undiagnosed, especially in people who have learned to tolerate or suppress their reactions. Yet the cost of this suppression can be profound, leading to fatigue, irritability, avoidance behaviours, and even meltdowns.
Despite the prevalence of these symptoms, sensory sensitivity remains underrepresented in most ADHD diagnostic criteria. As a result, many late-diagnosed individuals only realise in adulthood that their struggles with clothing textures, busy environments, or overlapping sounds weren’t about being picky or fussy — they were neurological.
4. Stimming and Verbal Loops: “I’ve played this song 37 times and I’m still not done.”
In another moment of recognition, a TikTok user shared that they had listened to the same song on repeat all day, finding comfort in the familiarity and rhythm. This kind of repetition — whether musical, verbal, or physical — is known as stimming, short for self-stimulatory behaviour.
Stimming has long been associated with autism, particularly in its more visible forms like hand-flapping or rocking. But research has shown that ADHDers also stim — often in less obvious but equally purposeful ways (Mahmood et al., 2020). These can include tapping, humming, chewing, leg bouncing, nail picking, or repeating comforting phrases.
For AuDHD individuals, who carry traits of both ADHD and autism, stimming is often a complex and dynamic form of emotional regulation. It can serve to soothe anxiety, enhance focus, manage boredom, or buffer against sensory input. What may appear to others as “fidgeting” or “odd habits” are actually essential coping strategies.
The validation that comes from recognising stimming as adaptive — not disruptive — is huge. Many people report that allowing themselves to stim openly, or using tools like fidget toys, has improved their concentration, reduced anxiety, and made masking less necessary. These behaviours are not signs of dysfunction; they are signs of self-support.
5. Diagnostic Surge: “It’s not just me — more people are getting diagnosed.”
Perhaps one of the most emotionally validating experiences on social media is watching another adult say, “I was just diagnosed at 35 — I finally understand myself.” These moments, often raw and joyful, mirror a broader epidemiological shift.
The number of adult ADHD and autism diagnoses has increased dramatically over the past decade. A 2025 study of 114,000 patient records found that adult ADHD diagnoses rose by over 60% between 2016 and 2023, particularly among women, nonbinary individuals, and people previously misdiagnosed with anxiety or depression (Thompson et al., 2025).
Similarly, autism diagnoses in adults have seen a staggering increase. Smith and Raynor (2024) found a 450% rise in diagnoses for people aged 26–34 over an 11-year period. Researchers attribute this to multiple intersecting factors: greater awareness of masking, improved diagnostic criteria, reduced stigma, and the amplification of lived experiences via social media.
While some critics express concern over “overdiagnosis,” most experts argue that we are witnessing not a surge in incidence, but a long-overdue recognition of individuals who were missed due to gendered expectations, socioeconomic barriers, or culturally biased diagnostic tools. For many, these late diagnoses are less about pathology and more about finally receiving permission to stop pretending.
The act of naming what you’ve lived with all along is powerful. As more people speak openly about their neurodivergence, the cultural understanding of ADHD and autism is expanding — and becoming more accurate.

These five TikTok moments may seem lighthearted or even humorous on the surface, but their impact runs deep. They serve as gateways to a broader self-awareness that many adults have spent decades without. For late-diagnosed neurodivergent people — particularly women, nonbinary individuals, and other historically underdiagnosed populations — the recognition of traits like emotional dysregulation, sensory overload, stimming, and rejection sensitivity offers a kind of psychological reconciliation.
Social media is not a diagnostic tool, but it has become an emotional mirror. In spaces where clinical understanding often lags behind lived reality, platforms like TikTok and Instagram have emerged as spaces for connection, self-reflection, and soft landings. They are shaping a new era of public neurodivergent identity — one that is driven not by pathology, but by visibility and validation.
As diagnostic rates climb, especially among adults who were missed earlier in life, we must continue to bridge the gap between science and storytelling. The stories we tell — and the videos we share — are not trivial. They are the modern folklore of neurodivergence: honest, accessible, and deeply necessary.
Ultimately, recognising yourself in a meme or video isn’t the end of the journey. It’s the beginning of reclaiming a version of yourself that makes sense — on your terms, in your words, and within a community that finally reflects you back.
