ADHD Body Doubling: The Research Behind Why You Focus Better With Someone There

Body doubling is the practice of doing a task in the presence of another person, in the same room, on a video call, or even alongside a stranger in a cafe, so that starting and finishing the task becomes easier. If you have ever cleaned your whole kitchen the moment a friend arrived, or finally written the report you had been avoiding for a week only because someone was sitting across the table from you, you have already done it.

For a lot of neurodivergent adults, that other presence does something that willpower on its own cannot. This post covers what body doubling is, what the research actually shows, why it seems to work, the many forms it takes, and the parts the popular coverage tends to skip, including when it can backfire. Everything here is grounded in peer-reviewed research, and I have flagged clearly where the evidence is still thin.

What exactly is body doubling?

Body doubling means using the presence of another person to help you start, stay with, or finish a task. The other person does not need to help you, and they do not even need to be doing the same thing. They can be beside you at the kitchen table, on the other end of a video call, or a stranger at the next desk in the library. Eagle et al. (2024) gathered definitions from 220 people and distilled a shared community definition along exactly these lines: using the company of others, whether co-located, remote, a stranger or someone you know, to help you stay focused on a task of any kind, as a form of accountability or a reminder to keep going.

The term is far newer than the practice. It was coined in 1996 by Linda Anderson, an ADHD coach, yet the strategy itself is something people report having used for years before they had a word for it (Eagle et al., 2024). That gap between doing it and naming it is one of the most striking findings in the whole area, and I will come back to it.

One clarification is worth making early, because it matters for how you use it at work. Body doubling is related to co-working and to parallel play, but it is broader than either. Eagle et al. (2024) note that body doubling does not require both people to do the same task, and does not require them to interact at all. Two friends can sit in the same room, one folding laundry and one answering emails, and both benefit. That flexibility is the entire point.

For organisations: If your team already runs focus sprints or co-working blocks, you are offering a form of body doubling whether you call it that or not. Naming it, and making it opt-in rather than mandatory, turns an informal habit into a low-cost, low-risk support that any employee can use without having to disclose a diagnosis.

Why do so many of us discover body doubling so late?

Because we were doing it long before anyone gave it a name. This is one of the most striking findings in the research, and it lands especially hard for late-diagnosed adults. In Eagle et al. (2024), 57 percent of participants had heard the term body doubling before, but once they were given a plain definition, 75 percent recognised it as something they already did. Nearly a quarter, 24 percent, encountered the term for the first time while taking the survey itself.

The timing gap is striking. On average, participants had been body doubling for around four years, but had only known the word for about a year and a half (Eagle et al., 2024). Fifty-two people said they had always done it. One participant described finding the term online and realising it made them cry, because they finally understood they had been doing this all along (Eagle et al., 2024).

If that resonates, you are in good company. Putting a name to a strategy you have used instinctively for years can be a real source of self-understanding and connection, and it reframes something you might have seen as a personal quirk or a crutch as a legitimate, research-recognised coping strategy. For a lot of late-diagnosed neurodivergent adults, that reframe is part of the wider work of understanding how their own brain has been getting by.

For organisations: The naming gap has a workplace parallel. Many employees are already using self-taught strategies like body doubling without recognising them as accommodations, and without ever asking for support. Describing these strategies openly, and treating them as valid, makes it far easier for staff to name what helps them before they reach the point of burnout.

Why does body doubling help when willpower on its own does not?

The short answer is that it externalises the things a neurodivergent brain can struggle to generate internally: momentum, accountability, and a reason to begin right now. In the Eagle et al. (2024) survey, 186 of the 220 participants said they were more likely or somewhat more likely to finish a task when another person was present, and almost half chose the stronger option of simply more likely. Task initiation, the act of getting started at all, was the second most common reason people gave for using the strategy.

For many neurodivergent adults the hardest part of a task is getting started. A pile of laundry is not really one job, it is a dozen small transitions, each of which can stall an ADHD or autistic brain that already finds initiation and follow-through difficult. Eagle et al. (2024) open their findings with exactly this example, describing how a load of washing can sit wet in the machine for days because of the sheer number of steps and switches involved, rather than any lack of effort. A body double collapses that friction. Around 30 participants in the same study said they used body doubling specifically to feel less anxious or overwhelmed by daunting tasks.

There is an accountability effect as well. Twenty-six participants named accountability directly. For some, that meant a body double gently pulling them back on track. For others it was more subtle: the simple sense that someone else was there and might notice, which was enough to keep them moving. One participant described another person in the room, even a silent one, as external policing that kept them on task (Eagle et al., 2024).

Companionship matters too, and not only as pressure. Participants in Eagle et al. (2024) described feeling less alone in their tasks, borrowing a bit of another person’s energy to get going, and finding that a to-do list felt less intimidating when someone else was working nearby. For some, the other person simply provides the stimulation an under-stimulated brain needs to lock onto a task. This is why body doubling can work even when the other person says nothing and does something completely unrelated. Their presence is doing the work, not their input.

For organisations: The lesson for managers is that for many neurodivergent staff the hardest part is getting started, which is different from ability or effort. A short shared start to a piece of work, even five minutes of let us both begin now, can unlock a task that has been stalled for days. This costs nothing and signals that initiation support is a normal part of how the team works.

Does body doubling actually work, or is it just a social media trend?

This is the part where honesty matters more than hype. Body doubling is real, widely used, and increasingly studied, but the evidence base is young and mostly descriptive. Until 2024 there was no formal academic study of it at all (Eagle et al., 2024). Since then the picture has widened quickly.

Eagle et al. (2024) remains the anchor study: a survey of 220 people, around 88 percent of them neurodivergent and 55.9 percent identifying as female, establishing how and why people use the strategy. In a workplace context, Yaukey et al. (2026) analysed 114 posts and more than three thousand comments from the r/adhd community about working from home, and found that body doubling was the single most cited technique for staying on track, with virtual body doubling through apps like Focusmate mentioned most often. Liu et al. (2026) studied ADHD adults who livestream their study sessions, treating study with me content as a form of body doubling. Researchers have even begun testing robot body doubles: O’Connell (2026) found that all but one of eleven university students with ADHD kept using a small companion robot voluntarily across a two-week trial.

What the field does not yet have is large, controlled evidence that body doubling improves measured performance, and it does not yet know precisely why it works. Tan et al. (2026) put this plainly in their review, noting that body doubling remains under-researched and that empirical studies are limited to a small number of papers and theses. Early objective work is beginning, including an EEG study looking at focus during reading tasks with and without a body double (Schuenke et al., 2025), but the samples are tiny. So the honest position is this: strong lived-experience evidence and fast-growing academic interest, with the rigorous outcome studies still to come.

For organisations: Treat body doubling as a promising, low-risk, well-liked strategy rather than a proven clinical intervention. You do not need randomised trials to let people co-work if they find it helpful, and the low cost and high uptake make it an easy thing to enable. Just avoid overselling it as a cure or mandating it as a productivity tool.

Why does body doubling work? The mechanism is genuinely unsettled

You will see a lot of confident explanations online. The research is far more cautious, and that caution is worth passing on to you honestly.

Several theories get offered. One is mirror neurons, the idea that watching someone work makes you unconsciously mirror their focus. Eagle et al. (2024) mention it, but they also note that the theory has acknowledged flaws, and that mirror neuron systems are thought to function atypically in autistic people, which makes it a shaky explanation for an autistic or AuDHD audience in particular. Another is the Hawthorne effect, the tendency to change our behaviour when we know we are being observed. A third is social facilitation, defined by Floyd Allport back in 1924, which describes how performance can improve when someone works near us. The catch, as Eagle et al. (2024) point out, is that social facilitation is about performance on the same task, whereas body doubling is about motivation and getting started, and does not require a shared task at all.

The dopamine explanation is popular too, the idea that another person’s presence provides the stimulation an ADHD brain is short on. It is plausible, and it fits what a lot of people describe, but it has not been directly tested for body doubling specifically. So rather than hand you a tidy mechanism, the accurate answer is that we do not fully know yet, and the theories borrowed from elsewhere each fit only partly. For a strategy this widely used, that is a real gap in the science, and one worth naming honestly.

For organisations: You do not need to understand the mechanism to support the strategy. What matters is that a meaningful number of neurodivergent employees report that it helps them start and finish their work. Enable it, ask people what works for them, and leave the why to the researchers.

What are the different types of body doubling?

One of the most useful contributions of the research is a map. Eagle et al. (2023, 2024) describe body doubling along two dimensions: space and time, meaning how live and how physically close the other person is, and mutuality, meaning how aware the other person is of their role and how much accountability is involved. Those two dimensions capture an enormous range.

In person, online, or through a screen?

At one end you have high-contact, high-accountability set-ups: two people on a video call running timed work sprints together, each knowing exactly what the other is meant to be doing. At the other end you have ambient companionship: sitting in a cafe among strangers who have no idea they are helping you focus. Both count as body doubling. In the Eagle et al. (2024) data, people body doubled most often with friends, around 60 percent, then family and co-workers, but a notable minority used strangers online, around 20 percent, or strangers in public, around 16 percent. Most did it at home, though many also used cafes, libraries and their workplaces.

Then there is the media form. A large group of people body double with recorded or livestreamed content: study with me videos, Twitch streams, or the endlessly running Lofi Girl channel, which acts as a kind of study buddy for millions of viewers. Liu et al. (2026) focus on this livestreaming form specifically. And a growing set of paid platforms, Focusmate among them, exist to match you with a virtual co-working partner on demand, which is what many of the remote workers in Yaukey et al. (2026) reached for.

For organisations: There is no single correct format, so flexibility is the accommodation. Some staff will want a scheduled co-working call, others just a quiet shared room, and others headphones and an ambient stream. Offering a menu rather than one prescribed method respects the wide variation the research documents, and it costs very little to provide.

What kinds of tasks is body doubling actually good for?

Mostly the ordinary, avoidable ones. In Eagle et al. (2024), the most common activities people used body doubling for were household chores such as cleaning, laundry and tidying, followed by study and paid work. People also used it for admin, errands, writing, reading, coding, and self-care tasks like cooking, hygiene and exercise. In other words, the tasks that are easy to describe and hard to begin.

The workplace research narrows this a little. Yaukey et al. (2026) found that when ADHD remote workers named specific tasks that suited body doubling, the two that came up were coding and writing, both of which reward long stretches of solo focus. That fits the wider pattern: body doubling shines for work that is done alone but easy to drift away from.

For organisations: This tells you where to point the strategy. Deep, solo, easy-to-postpone work, such as writing a report, clearing a backlog, or working through code, is exactly where a co-working block helps most. Collaborative meetings are not the target. Protecting time for shared focused work is the practical move.

Can body doubling backfire? The part the trend videos leave out

Yes, and this is the most important section, because almost none of the popular coverage mentions it. Body doubling is not one-size-fits-all, and it is not automatically good for everyone every time.

Eagle et al. (2024) are careful to record this. Some participants found another person’s presence more distracting than helpful, and needed the right conditions, or the right person, for it to work at all. The strongest cautionary evidence comes from Liu et al. (2026), who studied ADHD adults livestreaming their study sessions. They found the strategy helped at first, then degraded over time into four distinct problems. The social side became a source of interruption. Attention drifted from actually studying into performing for an audience. People grew dependent on high-stimulation set-ups and could no longer work without them. And, most tellingly, some felt genuine anxiety and shame about being watched, worrying that they would be seen as slacking. A tool that began as focus support turned into a source of pressure.

There is a financial dimension too. Yaukey et al. (2026) noted that many body doubling apps run on paid subscriptions, and that employees often pay for these themselves, which can place an unfair cost on the very people already carrying the load of managing their attention at work.

None of this means body doubling is a bad idea. It means it is a tool with an edge, and using it well involves noticing when it stops serving you. If the presence of others tips from support into performance, or you find you cannot work without it, those are signals to adjust the set-up rather than push through.

For organisations: If you offer body doubling, offer it carefully. Keep it opt-in, never performance-monitored, and never a surveillance tool with cameras forced on, which the research links directly to shame and anxiety. If you provide access to a paid co-working platform, fund it as a workplace tool rather than leaving staff to cover the cost. The difference between a support and a stressor is whether the person stays in control of it.

How do you actually start body doubling?

Start small and low-stakes. The research is reassuring here, because it shows there is no wrong way to do it. You could text a friend to say you are both going to spend the next half hour on your respective admin, then check in when you are done. You could put on a study with me video while you clean. You could take your laptop to a cafe or library and borrow the ambient focus of the room. You could book a session on a virtual co-working platform if you want the structure of a stranger and a timer.

The thing to pay attention to is which end of the spectrum suits you. Some people need high accountability, a real person who knows their task, to get going at all. Others find that level of scrutiny stressful and do far better with ambient, low-pressure company. Neither is more correct than the other. Try a couple of formats and keep the one that lowers the barrier to starting without adding a new kind of pressure.

For organisations: Managers can model this by normalising it. A simple standing invitation, such as an optional weekly co-working hour with cameras off and no reporting, gives people a safe way to try body doubling without singling anyone out or requiring them to disclose anything.

What the research still gets wrong, or has not done yet

This is where I want to plant a flag, because the gaps are as important as the findings, and naming them is part of using research honestly.

First, there is almost no AuDHD-specific research. The studies group ADHD and autistic people together, and while ADHD adults dominate the samples, no one has yet looked closely at how body doubling works for people who are both autistic and ADHD, whose sensory and social needs can pull in different directions. Second, the samples skew heavily towards the United States, Europe, and more recently China, with barely any data from Aotearoa or the wider Asia-Pacific, so we cannot assume the findings map neatly onto a New Zealand context. Third, the samples are small and mostly self-report, and the rigorous outcome research is only beginning (Tan et al., 2026). Fourth, and we know this thanks to Liu et al. (2026), the potential downsides of body doubling are badly under-studied compared with the benefits.

I flag these not to undermine the strategy, but because you deserve to know where the confident claims outrun the evidence. Body doubling is one of the clearest examples of neurodivergent communities working something out for themselves years before the research caught up. The science is finally arriving. It has simply not finished.

The bottom line

Body doubling works for a great many neurodivergent adults. It is cheap, flexible, and increasingly backed by research, and it comes with genuine caveats that the trend coverage skips over. If you have spent years wondering why you can only face the dishes when someone else is home, there is now a name for what you have been doing, a growing body of research behind it, and a whole spectrum of ways to use it that you can shape to fit your own brain.
