If you’ve scrolled Instagram or TikTok lately, you might have noticed that it feels like everyone has ADHD or autism these days. From viral videos about dopamine dressing, to relatable memes about executive dysfunction, or even #relatable meltdown stories, neurodivergent content is everywhere.

But is the internet just obsessed with these labels right now, or are we truly seeing a rise in neurodivergent traits being recognized?

Let’s break down what’s actually going on. In this article, we’ll cover:

  • Why social media is pushing so much ADHD and autism content
  • The real data on ADHD and autism symptoms worldwide
  • The science of self-diagnosis and why people relate so deeply to these stories
  • Five reasons why you might be seeing neurodivergent content all the time

So… what is neurodiversity actually? Most people mistakenly use “neurodiversity” and “neurodivergence” interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing—neurodiversity describes the natural variation in human brains, while neurodivergence refers to individuals whose brains function differently from the societal “norm.” Neurodiversity is the whole ecosystem—the full spectrum of how human brains work. Neurodivergence? That’s when your brain works differently from the expected norm.

People keep mixing them up, but they’re not the same. ADHD TikTok is an absolute juggernaut, with hashtags like #ADHD and #Autism drawing hundreds of millions of views. In 2025 alone, TikTok’s top 180 ADHD-related videos hit over half a billion views combined! That is an enormous cultural footprint, especially for a condition that was considered “rare” or “troublesome” a generation ago.

Why does the algorithm love ADHD and autism?

It comes down to four words: relatable, emotional, sticky, and shareable.

ADHD symptoms like forgetting your keys, spacing out in class, or hyperfocusing on a video game resonate with huge audiences. Autism symptoms like sensory overload or social awkwardness resonate too. Many of these videos are short, funny, self-deprecating, and deeply relatable — which means people engage with them, save them, share them, and comment “OMG that’s me!”

Once you interact with one of these videos, the algorithm shows you ten more. That’s called interest-based curation, and it creates a powerful feedback loop.

Plus, creators have huge incentives to keep making this content. Views mean sponsorships, brand deals, Patreon income, and even merch sales. That monetization loop has supercharged the visibility of neurodivergent content even more.


Viral and Relatable: Why ADHD and Autism Content Explodes

Let’s face it, even neurotypical people see themselves in some of these clips. Who hasn’t misplaced their phone? Who hasn’t procrastinated? This is why neurodivergent videos go so viral — because executive dysfunction isn’t only an ADHD thing, it’s a human thing.

The difference is that, for people with a clinical ADHD or autism diagnosis, these traits are persistent, severe, and life-impacting. But on social media, those nuances can get lost. What stays is the highly relatable “oh, same!” moment.

That can lead people to wonder, “Am I neurodivergent?” which is exactly what keeps them engaged. TikTok creators, intentionally or not, amplify that curiosity.

A 2022 study published in JMIR Mental Health found ADHD hashtags on TikTok more than doubled in one year — showing the massive hunger for this kind of content. Combine that with Instagram Reels trends and you have a tidal wave of mental health storytelling.


Lower Stigma and Community Boom

Another major reason this content is thriving is that talking about neurodivergence is finally safer and more socially acceptable.

Even a decade ago, saying “I’m autistic” or “I have ADHD” might have been met with skepticism or pity. Today? There is a growing culture of neurodiversity pride, where people see their brains as simply different, not defective.

This cultural shift is huge. It means creators and viewers can share stories about ADHD in women, autism in women, or high masking ADHD without fear of as much stigma. Communities form, friendships are made, hashtags flourish, and suddenly your feed is full of real people talking about their neurodivergent experiences.

It’s beautiful, really, even if it can feel overwhelming.


The Hard Data: Are Diagnoses Actually Increasing?

OK, let’s nerd out. You know I love data!

Globally, ADHD affects about 5% of children, with adult ADHD rates estimated between 2–4%. In the United States, adult ADHD rates jumped from 2.5% in 2007 to about 4.4% today. Stimulant prescriptions alone rose 30% from 2020 to 2022, a massive spike that reflects a wave of newly diagnosed adults.

In Australia, ADHD medication use grew almost 300% over the past decade. In New Zealand, policy changes rolling out in 2026 will let GPs diagnose adult ADHD, because right now waitlists are 18 months long in some areas!

And what about autism?

Globally, about 1–2% of people are autistic. But in the United States, the CDC now estimates that 1 in 36 children has an autism diagnosis — the highest ever recorded. Japan’s most recent studies suggest about 1 in 55 kids is on the autism spectrum, and New Zealand clocks in around 1 in 54.

This doesn’t mean more people are suddenly “getting” autism or ADHD. It means people who were missed before — especially women, nonbinary folks, and kids of color — are finally being diagnosed. The result is a huge surge in diagnosis data that looks like an epidemic, but is actually a recognition gap being closed.


The COVID Factor

One other driver of this boom is COVID.

When the pandemic hit, schools closed, offices went remote, routines were obliterated, and all our coping strategies disappeared. People were left alone with their brains for the first time, no distractions, no structure — and suddenly all those ADHD symptoms or autism traits had nowhere to hide.

Studies from Frontiers in Psychology showed a clear jump in adult ADHD diagnosis after the first lockdown waves. People could see their patterns in high definition for the first time.

And then they went online looking for answers.


What About Medication Shortages?

If you’ve struggled to get a stimulant prescription lately, you’re not alone.

The rise in adult ADHD diagnosis, combined with stricter manufacturing quotas and supply chain issues, has created a global shortage of medications like Adderall, Ritalin, and Vyvanse. The UK, US, Australia, and New Zealand all report ongoing shortages that started in 2023 and have continued into 2025.

This reflects just how massive the demand for ADHD treatment has become.


Five Reasons You’re Being Fed Neurodivergent Content

OK, let’s break this down for you in simple terms. Why is TikTok or Instagram pushing all this at you?

1. Algorithms thrive on relatability. If you pause on a single ADHD or autism clip, the algorithm will send you more — because it wants to keep you scrolling.

2. ADHD and autism are deeply relatable. A lot of traits (like procrastination or sensory discomfort) are common human experiences, so millions connect with them, even without a diagnosis.

3. Self-diagnosis is booming. Because it can take months or years to see a specialist, people turn to social media to self-assess.

4. Neurodiversity pride is on the rise. People feel safer to talk about being neurodivergent now, which means more creators making content.

5. Viral trends amplify the conversation. When one ADHD meme takes off, a thousand creators repeat it, creating a constant flood of relatable content.


Am I Neurodivergent, Or Just Human?

If you’re reading this thinking, OMG, I do all those things — hold up.

ADHD and autism are real clinical diagnoses that involve significant impact on your life. You can absolutely forget your keys sometimes and not have ADHD. You can dislike loud noises and not be autistic.

But if these patterns are persistent, disruptive, and have been present since childhood? Then it’s absolutely valid to explore a diagnosis.

If you can, find a clinician trained in ADHD in adults, autism in adults, and high masking traits, especially if you’re female, nonbinary, or come from a culture where neurodivergence is historically underdiagnosed.


So What About “Dopamine Dressing” and Other Buzzwords?

You’ve probably heard the phrase dopamine dressing by now — wearing bright colors to stimulate your mood — or seen people talk about stimming and fidgeting.

All of these are part of a wider neurodivergent vocabulary that’s blowing up online. They give people words to describe experiences they never had language for before. That alone is powerful.

It’s why so many of us see a random TikTok about masking and think, “Oh my god, that’s me!”


The Benefits of Neurodiversity Pride

While social media definitely has its flaws, there is something beautiful happening in this content boom.

People are normalizing being neurodivergent. They are celebrating their brains as spicy and unique, instead of broken or lazy.

Communities are growing around hashtags like #ADHD, #AuDHD, #Autism, #AdultADHD, #AutismInWomen, and #HighMaskingAutism.

That means fewer kids will grow up thinking they are simply “bad” or “weird.” Instead, they’ll see themselves reflected, supported, and able to advocate for accommodations and understanding.


But Watch Out for Misinformation

Of course, not everything on ADHD TikTok or autism TikTok is correct.

One study found almost half of the most popular ADHD videos contained inaccuracies or oversimplifications. So if you’re starting to question yourself, please remember:

  • A qualified professional should always confirm a diagnosis
  • Internet communities can support you, but they shouldn’t replace evidence-based evaluation
  • It’s OK to relate to content without needing a label

Final Thoughts: Why Your Spicy Brain Is Brilliant
